In the book "Emma" by Jane Austen, Emma, a middle class young woman, is given a hand written letter from her parents who died in a shipwreck. The letter informs Emma of how her father, a sea captain, was able to save her mother from drowning. Emma is devastated and not only because they were both killed in the accident but because she feels that the sea captain didn't do enough to save her mother and was somehow to blame for their deaths.
